I’m just going to say it. I like things a certain way. Not in a scary way (at least I don’t think so, haha), but enough that I notice when things are off. The bed looks better when I fluff the pillows just so. Laundry works best when I stay one step ahead of it. And if I ignore the kitchen for even half a day, it somehow turns into a major situation.
I used to think that meant I had a really solid system.
But even with that, my house can still get away from me. One busy day turns into two, something gets skipped, and suddenly I’m standing at the kitchen counter wondering how it got this bad this fast.
That part? Yeah, that’s normal.
What’s actually helped me more than any “perfect routine” is having a handful of homemaking tips I come back to when things start to feel like they’re getting away from me. Nothing strict. Nothing complicated. Just a few things that keep the house from tipping too far into the danger zone.
If your house has been feeling a little…loud lately (you know the feeling), this is where I’d start.
A Few Simple Homemaking Tips That Actually Help
1. Do a quick reset once a day
Not a full clean. Not even close, actually.
Just a “we live here, but we’ve got it together” reset. Straighten the couch, deal with the dishes, wipe the counters, take out the trash if it’s even thinking about overflowing (which mine almost always is).
I usually do this at night. Half the time I don’t feel like it, but I’ve never once regretted it the next morning. Walking into a tidy kitchen with my coffee is enough motivation to keep right on doing it.
This is basically the same idea behind my Sunday reset too, nothing extreme, just a little time set aside to get the house back to neutral before the week starts.
2. Give each day one job
Trying to do everything at once is exactly how nothing gets done (trust me on this one). Instead, I keep a loose rotation:
- Monday: floors
- Tuesday: bathrooms
- Wednesday: fridge clean-out (because trash day is Thursday)
- Thursday: laundry catch-up (which usually means re-washing something I forgot in the washer, oof)
- Friday: sheets and towels
It’s not set in stone. If I skip a day, I skip it. But having a general “today is ___ day” really helps me not think about it so much.
This is pretty much how I handle dinnertime too, haha. A loose plan with the same meals on repeat, nothing fancy (I wrote out what that actually looks like in a week here).

3. Close the kitchen at night
This is one of those homemaking tips that seems small or maybe even insignifcant, but trust me, it changes everything.
I don’t deep clean. I just finish the day. Clear the sink, wipe things down, run the dishwasher if I need to (which I usually do), and set up the coffee for the morning.
Sometimes I light a candle while I do it, mostly because it makes it feel less like a chore and more like I’m wrapping up the day (and that’s a really nice feeling).
The Little Things I Do That Make A Difference
These aren’t must-dos. They’re just the things I’ve noticed make my house feel more taken care of.
- I open the windows and/or doors whenever the weather cooperates, even if it’s just for five minutes first thing in the morning (which it usually is, because…Arizona).
- I wipe down surfaces during the week instead of saving it all for one day (this includes bathroom counters, go ahead and get that toothpaste cleaned off today).
- I keep one scent going (right now it’s something vanilla), so the house always smells the same, but in a good way.
- I try to restock things before we run out…because running out of paper towel feels way more dramatic than it should.
So you see, none of this is about doing more. It’s just paying attention to the littler things that make your home feel kept up.
If You Feel Behind
You’re not behind. You just live in your house. And some days it’s going to look like it. That’s just how it goes. There will be dishes in the sink, laundry in the dryer, and something sticky on the floor that no one wants to claim, but everyone keeps stepping in.
That doesn’t mean you’re doing it wrong. It just means you might need to reset one thing and keep on going.
And you know what? That’s really what these homemaking tips come down to. Not some perfect system, not a full blown house reset, just doing a few things when the house starts to feel off.
Start small. Pick one thing. Do it today.
The rest tends to follow. 🫶🏻
