Every time I pull into the driveway here, I have one of those “wait…we actually live here?” moments.
Not because the house is perfect (it definitely isn’t), but because after what felt like months and months of chaos, decisions, packing, unpacking, waiting, selling, not selling, moving, and then waiting some more, we’re finally getting to the part where we simply…live here. And, I think this is my favorite part yet.
It seems like the exciting milestones get all the attention. Closing day. Moving day. The first night (when we slept on an air bed and woke up 2 hours later on the floor, haha).
But no one really talks about the weeks afterward, when you’re buried in boxes (and stuff), trying to figure out which drawer makes the most sense for the measuring cups and why every single trip to Home Depot somehow costs $217. These are the days that actually make a house feel like yours, however.
Lately I’ve been working more on the little things around here. Planting hydrangeas by the front door. Hanging roman shades and linen curtains. Finding homes for things instead of leaving them in boxes and saying “I’ll deal with it later.” In fact, I’ve about gotten through all the boxes (woo!).
None of it is particularly exciting, but every small project makes this place feel a little more like us, and a little more like home.
I’ve also been finding my way back to work. For a while, blogging and everything related to it had to take a back seat. There simply weren’t enough hours in the day, and honestly, I didn’t have much left in the tank after everything else (it didn’t help that I packed up all my gear and props way too soon either, oof).
It feels really good to be back in the kitchen testing recipes again. Writing homemaking posts. And popping into the community to catch up with all of you. I missed it so much more than I realized.
I’m also learning something I probably should’ve figured out years ago (but better late than never, right?). Home isn’t created all at once. It’s a much slower process. In fact, it’s built in a million tiny moments.
When the doormat you ordered finally arrives after being delayed in transit forever. The fresh flowers hanging on the back patio on the scrolly iron hooks you bought twice by accident (thanks babe). A new favorite recipe becoming part of the weekly dinner rotation. Sitting on the porch in the cool morning air with a hot cup of coffee before everyone else is awake.
It’s the simple things. And those are the things I remember most anyway. Still unpacking a little. Still decorating a lot. Still figuring out small town living…and where to get our mail. But finally feeling settled enough to enjoy this new life a tad. This a really nice place to be…
What’s one small thing you’ve done recently that made your house feel a little more like home?
