I Have A Confession
I have a confession to make. I’ve officially reached the pinnacle of my existence – I am a Mimi (that’s what Hannah and I decided I should be called, since we already have a Grandma in our family). That’s right, not a mom, not a grandma, but a Mimi. It’s a name that just rolls off the tongue and feels like a warm, cozy blanket. And let me tell you, being a Mimi is the greatest thing that’s ever happened to me.
I love that I get to spoil my grandson rotten without feeling one ounce of guilt. As a Mimi, I have full permission to indulge in all of the fun stuff without any of the responsibility. It’s like being a parent, but with way less stress.
But perhaps the best part of being a Mimi is the bragging rights. I mean, have you ever met a Mimi who didn’t want to show off their grandkids? It’s like a badge of honor that we wear with pride. We’ll regale anyone who will listen with tales of our grandkids’ accomplishments and then bust out hundreds of photos to share. And I’ll be totally honest here, my grandson is pretty darn impressive. He just is.
Of course, being a Mimi isn’t all rainbows and unicorns. There’s a lot of crying and there are numerous meltdowns each day, but I love that I can just swoop in for all the quality time I want and then hand him back when things get rough.
And honestly, all of that just makes the good moments even sweeter. Like when he looks up at me, recognizes it’s me and smiles with his huge open-mouth grin, or the way I can calm him to sleep in my arms while I’m ‘Mimi bouncing’ him. Those moments are priceless and make all of the other craziness worth it tenfold.
So if you’re on the fence about becoming a Grandma, a Mimi, a Nana, a Gran, a Grammy, a Meemaw, a Mawmaw, or a Yia Yia, let me tell you, don’t be. There are few things in life you’ll like more. You get all the joy without all the work. It’s the best reward for surviving parenting, if you ask me.
