This gorgeous all double crochet blanket (afghan) was my very first one and has become one of my favorite blankets ever! All 18,000 stitches of it were well worth it!
The story about this blanket
Two summers ago, we spent a week in the White Mountains and I decided I needed a new hobby. Yep, right then and there. Crochet. I really didn’t think about it much or ponder the idea, I just went for it. I headed into town (where they have only a Wal-Mart) and hit up the craft department.
Now, I have never crocheted (or knitted) before, in fact, the last yarn/string project I remember doing was making knotted embroidery floss bracelets in Junior High… So, to say I started from scratch couldn’t be more accurate.
I bought the book “I Taught Myself Crochet”, which included an instructional DVD (score!) along with numerous crochet hooks, afghan patterns (why mess with something small, go big right?), several colors of yarn, and of course a handy carrying case.
Well, thanks to the book, YouTube, and some diligence I was able to pick up some simple stitches and spent 2 whole days in my PJ’s on the sofa doing nothing but crocheting a perfectly imperfect and flawed piece of random – was going to be an afghan, until it took on a completely jagged and unsightly shape. Scrap that.
Upon arriving home later that week, I was inspired to start a “real” project, so I bought some more yarn and began again. This pattern of starting and ripping out, and then eventually abandoning projects continued on for several more weeks.
Finally, in hopes of actually completing a project, I decided on something easy; a simple throw-sized afghan, with only 1 stitch, and minimal color changes. I could do that! After only a week and a half and 18,000 stitches, I am extremely proud to announce, I’VE FINISHED MY FIRST CROCHET BLANKET! It’s an all double crochet blanket (afghan)!
How I made this blanket
The pattern I used was simple, the entire blanket is crocheted in double crochet (dc), nothing fancy. Using a “J” or 6 mm hook, I chained 120 and did 150 rows (for a total of 18,000 stitches!).
For the border, I did one row of single crochet (sc) and then on top of that, one row of double crochet (dc) all the way around – that’s it! The finished size is approximately 50 x 60″.
The coolest part about the project was the random stripe generator I found online , which I used to create the inconsistent stripe pattern. It allows you to select your colors and the amount of rows you’ll need and then it generates the pattern for you! If you don’t like it, resubmit your selections until you find one that is visually appealing to you.
Then you just print it out and follow the pattern. This is not something I would normally do, considering I am a minimalist usually, but I ended up loving the unpredictable colors and chunkiness of this blanket, not to mention the fact that I actually completed an all double crochet blanket (afghan)!

I’ve been asked several times for the exact pattern I used from the random stripe generator, and believe it or not, I still have it handy, so I decided to add it to the post for everyone! If you’re interested in making this exact blanket, here are the instructions and the rows of colors I used (I started the chain with white):
All Double Crochet Afghan Instructions & Pattern
Size: 50″ x 60″ (To make larger or smaller, just add more chains or decrease number of chains.)
Yarn: Caron One Pound: Bright White 1, Pale Green 1 1/2, Soft Sage 1 1/2 (approximately).
Hook: US size J.
Pattern
Chain 120, ch 1, turn.
Row 1: Double crochet in 2nd chain from hook and across row. Ch 3, turn.
Row 2: Double crochet in 1st double crochet and across row, Ch 3, turn.
Repeat Row 2 until desired length (approximately 150 rows). Fasten off.
Border: Single crochet one row around blanket and then double crochet one row around blanket. You will need to add extra stitches in corners so they will lay flat (see You Tube for explanation). Fasten off.
I have included the color pattern I used below, or you may determine your own stripe pattern by using the Random Stripe Generator link. It will allow you to choose different stripe patterns.

I bought one pound of each color, but used more of the darker green and the white, but really depends on how big you want your blanket to be and how many rows you end up with of each color. It’s impossible to guess how much you will need because each random stripe pattern will require a different amount of each color. I’d say start with one pound of each color and go from there!

Hey Claudia! There is no formal pattern for this afghan, I just made the foundation chain and double crocheted each row. At the end I chained 2 and turned. The border is just one row of SC and one row of DC with a slip stitch to join. Hope this helps!
Why does a sl st need to be done? To join what? At the end of the row when you chain to turn, are you doing a sl st there? And why? Sorry, I’m a beginner and trying to make my first project too.
Hi Lori! No problem! I used the slip stitch to join the border rows so that were the two come together it will lay flat. For the afghan part, you won’t use any slip stitches. You chain 2 and turn at the end of each row. Hope that helps!
How do you change colors?
Hey Jen! I did it the hard way, cutting off and not carrying, but I’ve heard it’s easier to carry. You can find several helpful videos on changing colors in crochet on YouTube! Happy crocheting!
How many chains do you start with?
It depends on how large you want the finished project to be Kathy; I think I chained 120 for this particular one.

Hi Jo Ann! Yes, as with most DC projects, chain two before turning and count that as the first stitch. That should help you keep a nice square shape. Happy crocheting!

Hi Linda! Thank you so much! I believe I selected only even numbers from 2 to 10. I wanted it to look striped, not just blocks of color, does that make sense? I ended up changing colors more than I wanted to, so if you’re still getting the hang of things, you might want to do bigger chunks (so you have to change less often). either way, the stripe generator is pretty fun! 🙂

Starting out defiantly takes some practice. My first project was a scarf almost two years ago, I started small. I can’t tell you have many times I pulled it apart and started over, and gave up and cut it off. But I’m glad I did, I have made many scarves and given as gifts and sold them. I finished the afghan, now I’m going to start the edges. I, not sure how or where to put the stitches on the sides of the afghan. I don’t want to add extra stitches or it will ripple. Any tips or video as to where you put the stitches?

Hi Andrea! Woohoo! I’m not going to lie, I had to play around with mine to get it to #1 lay flat and #2 not have big holes. I find that using the smaller stitches in the chain versus the big open holes from the last row of dc works better. Just make sure to space them evenly all the way around or it will have a ‘wonky’ shape in the end! I’d love to see it when you’re done. 🙂
Beautiful blanket. Simple is often the best way. I was nine when I first started. I wanted to make a blanket for my dolls so I asked mum to teach me. 15 years later I’m still going and I love it. I do many different crafts but crochet is one I always come back to eventually.

I am so excited that I found this pattern! I never thought of doing one with only DC. Actually, I am crocheting a baby blanket. I just found out the gender, and I have only a few weeks before the baby shower. I am using variegated yarn (soft for a baby), and a size 4mm hook. This keeps the yarn close enough that it doesn’t have large gaps, and should keep baby Sadie warm! I should be able to move fast enough to finish in plenty of time. How to do the ends (how many to chain before I turn, do I do a dc in every stitch all the way along and then after the last dc in the stitch, chain 2 and turn?) Hi Holly! I think you could probably follow any basic crochet instruction (like maybe on YouTube) for beginning double crochet. But, if I remember right, I started in the second from the hook, double crocheted all the way across and then chained one at the end of each row before turning. I hope I am ‘somewhat’ helpful haha! I love how simple your pattern is!’m following your pattern to a T, shall we say lol! I love how quick and simple it is. I started just last night and already I’m on row 7. The only thing I’ve done different is chosing different colours. I’m using up scraps of yarn colours I’ve had left lying around in my wool bag. The blanket is for myself when I’ve finished it.
I’ve only been crocheting for the last 3 years and have only my made toys and book covers. This is my very first huge project and my first project with over 100 stitches! Hope I stick to it. And hope you don’t mind me using your pattern xx

I just finished my first ‘scrap-gan’ this week using up leftover yarn from projects finished and/or abandoned (I did buy a few new balls just for some extra variety) and it was all sc but using two strands (one light/one dark color) and it turned out awesome!!!! I love the weight of it and the randomness of it! Great way to use up random yarns.

Even more impressive, each double crochet take 7 hand movements; wrap, insert, pull up a loop, wrap, draw through 2 loops (twice), for a total of 126,000 hand movements!

Hi Lidia, do you mean the border around the blanket or beginning the blanket itself. To start the blanket, you need a foundation chain, to start the border I chained 1 after the last row, turned, and then started with 1 row of SC all the way around to secure the shape and then did 1 row of DC with a slip stitch to join. Hey Eunice! There are actually no multiples for this pattern. Just chain as many as you need to make it wide enough and make sure to do that many stitches in each row. Skipping or adding stitches will make it a weird shape. Good luck! 🙂

When it was long enough, I did a row of single crochet and then a row of double crochet all the way around for the border with a slip stitch to join…and that was it!

Just wondering if you have a picture of the all double crochet afghan opened up and laid out so we could see a full picture. I am assuming your stripes run horizontal, is that right? Just trying to picture in my mind what the finished product will look like.

I read thru the comments & see that its ch 2 & then carry on with dc’s for your row, BUT do you start in the 1st st of the row?
And if I continue doi g row after row of dc, I’ll create a massive triangle! I’m confused lol HELP!
Generally you start in the second stitch of the new row.
I promise you will not make a triangle lol, just keep going row after row and you’ll see 🙂

Hi Phyllis! When I did mine, I cut the yarn, mostly because I didn’t know any better since it was my first project. There are several techniques you can use for changing colors, just do what works best for you! Happy crocheting!

Hi Julie! I just continued on from the last stitch, chained 1, turned, and single crocheted all the way around, then chained two and did a row of double crochet all the way around. Hope this helps! 🙂

Hello!!! just scrolling thro and saw your afghan. I did a lot of knitting many years ago and then decided crocheting was what I liked better. A REALLY easy pattern is cast on as many stitches as you want, 4 ply yarn, H or I hook and pattern is single crochet, double crochet all the way, turn and double the singles and single the doubles. Makes a good sturdy afghan with a pattern. All the grandsons have one – lime green and orange; green and black; dusty orange and dark green and another dark green and black. You can make this as big as you want – one is 6’4″ so took a lot of yarn. Also have one that I kept that is white, dark blue, med blue and tan with varigated blue/white/tan.

Did you count the foundation chain as row #1 or the first row of DC as row #1? Making this for a wedding present for my daughter in her wedding colors. 2nd afghan I made, first was for my son and it has some beginner’s mistakes but following an actual pattern for this one. Thanks much!

I love your striped afghan, in your description you are using the the dark teal, light teal and white, I am having a problem finding the 2 teal colors. I can find aqua but thats it, oh and white of course, not sure on the third color. My granddaughter just had her bedroom painted the bright teal color and I came across your afghan and thought the colors were perfect. Are you doing a double crochet in the last stitch of row two or in the turning chain? Some double crochet patterns count the turning chain as a stitch.

This is a beautiful throw that you have created. I want to crochet one for my daughter, but I cannot find Caron One Pound wool here in Toronto! Do you have any suggestions on a replacement wool. My concern is that the Caron brand has much more in a skein than any others that I find here and am confused as to how many skeins I should purchase. Hi there Mary! Oh goodness, well I know you can order them on Amazon right here or I’d suggest buying 3 of the 5oz skeins for each of the 3 colors you’re using. If you’re using more than three colors, you could probably get away with 2 of each color, but it also depends on how big you want the blanket to be. Hope this is helpful!

Hey Crystal! That’s exactly what I did. A slip stick to join and then I went on around with the border from there. I hadn’t done many borders either, so that might not be the ‘correct’ way to do it, but that’s what I did. Happy crocheting!

I am sort of new to crocheting, I wanted to find a simple pattern to use to make my first blanket, I came across your blog and saw this. How easy, just one stitch, throughout the whole blanket, why didn’t I think of that? I saved the random stripe link you posted. I went out immediately, purchased my yarn, 3 colors, cream, seafoam and jean blue (the blue is a nice contrast to the two lighter colors) came up with a pattern and I am about 1/3rd done, having just started it a few days ago. I will have to figure out which color to use as the boarder. I cannot wait until it is finished. I will be doing this for gifts this year.

All Double Crochet Afghan
Size: 50″ x 60″ (To make larger or smaller, just add more chains or decrease number of chains.)
Yarn: Caron One Pound: Bright White 1, Pale Green 1 1/2, Soft Sage 1 1/2 (approximately).
Hook: US size J.
Pattern:
Chain 120, ch 1, turn.
Row 1: Double crochet in 2nd chain from hook and across row. Ch 3, turn.
Row 2: Double crochet in 1st double crochet and across row, Ch 3, turn.
Repeat Row 2 until desired length (approximately 150 rows). Fasten off.
Border: Single crochet one row around blanket and then double crochet one row around blanket. You will need to add extra stitches in corners so they will lay flat (see You Tube for explanation). Fasten off.
I have included the color pattern I used, or you may determine your own stripe pattern by using the Random Stripe Generator link. It will allow you to choose different stripe patterns.

Hi Judy! That’s actually the most challenging part of being a new crocheter. You have to very carefully watch or feel for each stitch. You want to make sure you get only one stitch in every hole and not miss any. When you double up or miss stitches it ends up getting oddly shaped. I also find that when I’m just starting and have only a few rows done it will curl up on me. Happy crocheting!
Love the colors.. I have been crocheting since I turned 19.. my grandma taught me. My favorite stitch is the hacked with three colors..or more. I usually ch between 120 and 160 and then heck as many rows as I like. Usually till it covers my toes. I then sc around in each of the colors then use a variegated color for a shell stitch. Which just makes the blanket stand out. Thanks for sharing your pattern.

Hey Helen! I didn’t write an official pattern because I was so new. But the instructions as to how I made this are in the post itself, but I’ll post them here too.
“The pattern I used was simple, the entire blanket is crocheted in double crochet (dc), nothing fancy. Using a “J” or 6 mm hook, I chained 120 and did 150 rows (for a total of 18,000 stitches!).”
For the border, I did one row of single crochet (sc) and then on top of that, one row of double crochet (dc) all the way around – that’s it! The finished size is approximately 50 x 60″.

I chained three at three ends of the rows like someone suggested and it seemed like to much, so I created a ruffle on the sides by adding extra single crochets! It turned out cute. I’m making another right now and chaining two as you suggest works better.

Hey Stephanie! I used the big 1 pound skeins from Joann’s and I had one of each color plus an extra white (which I didn’t use).
I’m going to attempt to make this blanket, but I have a couple questions before beginning. The dimensions of the blanket are 50″ x 60″ – are the stripes going in the horizontal or vertical direction in regard to the longer dimension? Also, if I would like the blanket to be a bit longer, could I add one more row to each of the color rows – which would make the blanket have 183 rows instead of 150?
Hi Lisa! Okay, so yes, the blanket is 50″ wide and 60″ long with the stripes running horizontally across. For sure – you can make it as long as you want, just keep adding rows to the end. I’m terrible with keep track and counting rows (which is why I love random projects like this one), so when I’m getting close to the length, I lay the blanket flat and measure it with a measuring tape to see how long it is in inches. I think the temperature blanket would be too long if you are planning one row per day. They recommend single crochet and it will still be 8 – 10 feet long.

Hi Sarah! These are all Caron one pound skeins in bright white, soft sage, and teal. I think the teal is discontinued, but they have a gorgeous color called succulent in it’s place. That’s probably what I’d use. You can find all the colors at Joann’s. 🙂
