Today marks the very last day of winter break. It all went by so quickly! Can you believe the holidays are over? All of our Christmas decor is safely packed up in the garage cabinets for then next 10-1/2 months or so (haha) and in taking a look around here, the house seems…well, bare!
I don’t know about you, but I have this area in our house, a corner actually, in the girls activity/t.v. room that is empty. It was great during Christmas because this is where I put their tree and it filled up the room nicely, but now with no tree, it’s bare and…it bugs me.
I have a little 3 shelf bookshelf hanging out in the closet, which used to hold all of our movies and stuff, but it’s been empty since we moved. I didn’t really have a place for it, until now. I thought this would be a great way to add ‘something’ to that empty corner, especially since I didn’t want to go out and buy a piece of furniture! It’s not exactly my style and it doesn’t completely go with the house, but I own it, it’s in good shape, and it’s empty, so I’m using it. I drug it out of the closet and gave it a good dusting.
Here it is before:
After I got it cleaned up and put in place, I went on a scavenger hunt around the house for things to fill it up. i envisioned more decor than books, since the room is pretty plain, so I started with a simple wire tray with a few favorite books and a fancy bookend. I wanted to display the books in a unique way, so put them spine up and used the bookend to hold them in place. Ended up being super cute. I just added a few small decor items to finish off the tray (a rope ball and my Christmas star from Hobby Lobby).
For the remaining shelves, I just pieced some random things together that I liked. I used a tin can with some greenery and laid the lid on the shelf as a bonus, a fun clock, a few decor balls (green and rope), a little ceramic crock, a wooden and tin basket, and my favorite little box of things (which is empty, ironically).
I didn’t have any spare wall art or frames (which would have been really cute), so I added the green wreath tied in burlap on the wall and since it’s still chilly, I put a big basket full of cozy blankets next to the couch.
And here it is after:
As I’ve mentioned before, decorating often overwhelms me because there are so many choices. I have to remind myself to just go with what I like and what I know. Decorating doesn’t need to be stressful, time-consuming, or expensive; sometimes just rearranging the furniture or adding a quick and easy bookshelf is all you need to spruce up (or fill up) a room! No more boring, empty corners here! Woohoo!
